Obituary for Sam Martinez

Sam Martinez, 81-year-old Vinita resident passed away early Sunday, February 4, 2018 at St. Francis Vinita Hospital. He was born on July 26, 1936 in Bexar County, Texas to Enrique and Rita (Batilla) Martinez. Sam was in the United States Air Force from July 1955 until his retirement in July 1975. He was a staff sergeant and was honorably discharged. After his retirement from the Air Force Sam worked several years for Dow Chemical in Freeport, Texas. Sam was married to Sue (Boyle) on November 16, 1985 in Freeport. When he retired from Dow, He and Sue moved to Vinita and have lived here the last 20 years. Sam enjoyed going deep sea fishing and shrimping while in Texas, he also was a coin collector.

He was preceded in death by his parents, father in-law Richard Truscott, a sister, Mary Garcia and a brother, Henry Martinez.

The surviving family includes: his wife Sue of the home; a son Chris Upton of Oklahoma City; grandchildren, Summer and Jake Upton; great-grandchildren, Emmy, Adley, and Alyssa Upton; his mother in-law, Juanita Geri Truscott, and many other relatives and friends.

The celebration of life service and military rites will be held on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at 6:00 PM in the Burckhalter-Highsmith Chapel in Vinita, with Pastor Skip McClain officiating and the Tinker Air Force Honor Guard. Arrangements are by the Burckhalter-Highsmith Funeral Home of Vinita. Online condolences may be made at www.burckhalterfuneralhomevinita.com.
