Obituary for Ronald Jay Johnson

Ronald Jay Johnson, longtime teacher and coach, passed away July 16, at the age of 86.
He was born February 24, 1933, in Oklahoma City and was adopted at birth along with his identical twin brother, Donald, by Elza Vernon and Mary Jane Johnson of Tulsa.
He graduated from East Central High School in 1951, Northeastern State University in 1955 and obtained his Masters in Mathematics from Oklahoma State University in 1960.
He served in the US Army Reserves from 1957-1965.
Coach Johnson's career began in Tulsa at East Central High School in 1955. He taught in Erie, Kansas, for three years followed by a 20-year run at Vinita High School. He was at Vinita High School from 1960-80, where he was the head football coach from 1968-76 and the head boy's track and field coach from 1961-77. He also coached boys and girls basketball at VHS and was the Lady Hornets' first-ever track and field coach from 1977-79.
He moved to Texas and coached at Little Elm High School for 14 years and also coached and taught at Mannford High School and Oklahoma Union High School. He retired in 2010 after a 56-year teaching career.
Coach Johnson will be remembered for his love of family, the joy he took in teaching his students, and his passion for excellence in the arena of athletics. He loved and took pride in the many young people whose lives he touched as a teacher and a coach.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years Debbie of Vinita: daughters, Sally Walker and husband Bob of Joshua, Texas; Ronda Jameson of Texarkana, Texas; Mary Hicks and husband Mike of Eolia, Missouri; Amy Williams and husband Mark of Vinita; son, David Johnson and wife Abbie of Vinita; mother-in-law, Anita Giles of Vinita; sister-in-law, Donna Hensley and husband Rick of Vinita; sister-in-law, Mary Katherine Johnson of Sand Springs; 15 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, Elza Vernon and Mary Jane Johnson; brother Donald Johnson; brother Bob Clouse; sister-in-law Patti Clouse; brother-in-law David Giles; father-in-law Don Giles; and great-granddaughter Madeline Williams.
Services are under the direction of Burckhalter-Highsmith Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Vinita. Online condolences may be left at or on the funeral home's Facebook page.
Visitation will be Thursday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Burkhalter-Highsmith Funeral Home Chapel. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Friday at Cowboy Junction with Greg Highsmith officiating.
Pall bearers will be: Rick Hensley, Coby Hensley, Seth Collins, Jayton Collins, Hudson Jameson and Daniel Walker.
Interment will follow at the Big Cabin Cemetery.
