Obituary for Teddy E Dixon

Well known Vinita businessman Ted Dixon passed away Wednesday, July 17th, at the Heartsworth Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born May 27th, 1935, to Oscar and Bernice Haney Dixon. He graduated from Big Cabin school in 1953. He worked at the Fisher Body Plant in Flint, MI for a short time. On August 20, 1954 he married Ramona Mobley at the Christian Church in Vinita, Oklahoma.
He returned to Vinita and was employed by the Stanley Equipment Co. In 1957, he entered the U.S. Army and returned in 1959. After his return, he continued his employment with Stanley Equipment Co. until 1965. In 1965, he became part owner of the Hugh Ratcliff Insurance Agency. It became known as Dixon Insurance Agency. Ted served as Dean of the 26th Annual Insurance School held in Norman, OK. He became sole owner of the Vinita Hotel in 1976 where the office was located. Ted later sold his agency and the Vinita Hotel building.
Ted served as president of the Vinita Chamber Commerce in 1970. He participated in nine years of the annual Calf Fry Festival winning numerous awards.
Ted rode a mechanical horse in the Will Rogers Rodeo Parade for 21 years. On the day of the 22nd year, he was in the hospital with tick fever, so he retired the mechanical horse that year. He received a certificate of appreciation for his valuable contributions to the Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo from the American Legion Dale Peace Post #40 in April 1989.
Ted served as Vinita Jaycee President from 1962 to 1963. The Jaycees held a trimmed beard contest in connection with the Will Rogers Rodeo. The Vinita chapter was awarded a certificate for outstanding community service by the local Chamber of Commerce in March of 1963.
For 20 consecutive Christmas seasons, Ted appeared in the traditional red suit as Santa Claus making house calls and giving treats out in front of the Vinita Hotel where his office was located.
Ted was active in the real estate business in Craig County mainly in farm and ranch land. He also had a cattle operation for several years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Marjorie Smith, brothers Bill Dixon, David Dixon, Oscar Dixon, Joe Dixon, and Oliver Dixon.
Survivors include his wife of the home, daughter Shelley Dixon of Vinita, granddaughter Whitney Ogden and fiancé Logan Marble of Neosho, MO; Sister Buddy Woolman and husband Virgil of Vinita; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM on Friday, July 19, 2019 at the Burckhalter-Highsmith Chapel. The celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2019 at 3:00 PM at the First Baptist Church in Vinita, with Pastor Skip McClain officiating.
