Obituary for Ward E. Sumner

Ward Earl Sumner, 85-year-old rural Bluejacket resident, passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at his home. He was born on January 29, 1934 in Siloam Springs, Arkansas to Earl and Edith (Ward) Sumner. Ward graduated from Adair high school in 1952, he served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958 and in the Army National Guard from 1959 to 1962. He was a member of the American Legion Dale Peace Post #40 in Vinita for 46 years. Ward retired from Northeast Oklahoma Electric Co-op after 32 year of service in 1984. He enjoyed working and helping people. Ward served on the Bluejacket School Board for 10 years. Never met a stranger in his life, and best of all he knew Jesus. He was very proud of his Cherokee heritage, even more proud of his loving family. On October 4, 1971 he married the love of his life Glenda Fay Vail in Miami.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Earl and Edith Sumner, his sisters and their husbands, Mary Ruth and Glen Jones, Helen and Michael Dixon; his daughter, Connie (Sumner) Wilde.
The surviving family includes: his wife Glenda of the home; his children, Michael Sumner and wife Kasmah of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Shelly Boston and husband Randy of Vinita, Lori Gess and husband Darren of Vinita; eleven grandchildren, Travis and Rhea Wilson, Justin Wilson, Jacklyn Wilson, Yanti Sumner and Terrance Tyus, Randy and Karen Boston, Aliyyah and Carl Knaufi, Azizah and Ryan Michalski, Jerry Rose, Faith Gess, Darren Gess, Lily Gess and seven great-grandchildren; his sister Linda and husband Mel Arner of Phoenix ,AZ, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may give to the Craig County Cancer Outreach Association or the American Heart Association.
The celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2019 from 1-3 p.m. at the Craig County Fairgrounds Community Center.
